Occupational Therapy (O.T.) is a 4 year university degree that enables professionals to assist adults and children with physical, psychological or scholastic limitations to regain their maximum function with regards to work/school, personal care, domestic activities and leisure activities.

Patients/children are fully assessed, both physically and psychologically and treatment is based specifically on the individual needs and personal goals.

PHYSICAL TREATMENT
HAND INJURIES, such as fractures, tendon/nerve injuries, are treated with specific splinting that enables proper healing. Specific treatment protocols are employed that facilitate good functional return of movements.

HEAD INJURIES
Patients with head injuries, strokes or spinal cord injuries are treated with splinting and independence retraining in terms of self-care (Dressing, grooming), domestic activities (adaptations of cooking/cleaning utensils), return to previous/new adapted work duties and previous/new adapted leisure activities.

DISABILITY/MEDICO-LEGAL ASSESSMENTS
are also done to assist with insurance/court settlements in the case of permanent disabilities or impaired function.

PAEDIATRICS
Occupational Therapy helps with the development of gross and fine motor skills as well as visual perception (interpretation of information from eye to brain to muscles). This allows your child to correctly respond to what he sees, feels and hears around him, for example, to correctly write out numbers or letters and to adequately participate in gross motor play.  Children under the age of 10 are most likely to benefit.

Indications that your child may benefit from O.T. include:
  • Difficulty coping with the demands of their school grade
  • Difficulty with laterality (no left or right hand dominance, reversal of letters/numbers)
  • Reading Difficulty (skips lines or words)
  • Difficulties with copying (copies incorrectly from the board/book
  • Poor fine motor skills (Poor grip, cutting, writing skills)
  • Poor gross motor skills (clumsy child)

Liason with the surgeon, care-giver, employer or teacher with regards to progress or future plans also forms an important part of therapy.
